The
Garbage children of Cebu
The misery of those who bring up their
children on the garbage tips is shocking. The sole ray of hope on this
burning Phillipine garbage tip is the German priest, Heinz Kulüke. He
is, in fact, a university professor of philosophy -- however his
encounters with the garbage people have changed his life. He works
tirelessly to help the garbage people, as well as the girls in Cebu's
red light district. |

Chaos on the railways Manila
Home made
trollies share the rails of
Manila with trains, a recipe
for chaos...
|
|
Video
 |
Video: Life on the line
In the chaos of Manilas choked roads, a hair-rising mode
of transport has evolved: trolley cars that speed through the citys rail
tracks, evading frequent trains and the prying eyes of the police.
No traffic, laughs Henarco, pushing a
parasol-shaded trolley along a railway track at great speed. Hes been
running these rails for 18 years, and at half the price of public
transport and a fraction of the travel time, business is booming. But we
have enemies, Henarco says, referring to the high-speed trains, which
come every 15 minutes, when someone hears the hoot we just jump off! The
trains arent the only enemies for the community of trolley drivers who
live and work here. They also face periodic raids by the railway police.
Dinner, lunch, everything on this trolley, says Henarco, who was
relocated from a shanty town around these tracks, which was demolished
by the rail authorities 2 years ago. - Just play, the black screen is
just the start

Poverty
Situation Meet Marietta Ramirez, a former slum-dweller
in Baseco, Tondo, Manila. She was once statistically among the many
faceless poorest of the poor in the Philippines. Now, she is a proud
resident of GK Baseco, who has been given a new beginning, a fresh
start. She is still poor as far as society's standards go, but she now
has a face, a name, restored dignity and a sense of belonging.

Back to the Roots: Women Empowerment through Community
Farming
This is an entry to the "Project Inspire: 5 Minutes to Change the World"
initiative (www.5MinutestoChangetheWorld.org).
The project idea aims to promote food self-sufficiency, community
consolidation and women empowerment by assisting them in starting and
growing an agro-ecological community garden. The concerned community in
Rizal, Philippines, is slowly abandoning self-food production to work on
odd-jobs outside the community. It is hoped that with the project,
community members will be encouraged to go "Back to the Roots" --- to
bring back their food self-sufficiency while retaining a cash source, to
bring back their community consolidation and to remind them of the
women's potential to earn and lead. |
